Rome, Italy
Gallery of the Academy of San Luca - The original Compagnia de San Luca was founded in 1478, by a group of Roman artists who endeavored to support and elevate their artistic works. Throughout the 16th and 17th century, many artists were drawn to Rome to live, work, and study. However, without having a patron, it was hard to find a teacher, let alone a place to live and work. The Academy of San Luca intended to help serve the artist's needs. Over time, in exchange for patronage, each artist/candidate would donate a piece of artwork and a portrait. Today, the gallery is located in the 16th century Palazzo Carpegna (near the Trevi Fountain) and includes drawings, paintings, sculptures and 500 portraits. At the time of this writing, you may visit the gallery for free.

Asam Church, Munich |
Asam Church - Is a very small, beautiful Baroque church with only 12 rows of pews. The Asam brothers, a painter and a sculptor, designed and built it for themselves as a private chapel. The brothers began building the church in 1733. Cosmas Asam passed away before the unfinished church was inaugurated in 1746. Several years later, as work was still being done on the church, Egid Asam, passed away. Sadly, neither were to see the completion of their artistic masterpiece.

© City Lit - Keeley Street, London SlowTravelTales.com |
One of the reasons I love travelling so much is that I really like learning about stuff. Whether you're interested in art, architecture, astronomy, cooking, film history, language, photography, sports, writing, ad infinitum, each city in the world has enough going on by just walking around and taking it all in visually. It's hard to imagine ever getting bored anyplace.
But London has something extra special; the most wonderful Adult Education Institute you could ever hope to find - City Literary Institute aka City Lit.
Located in a modern multi story building in Covent Garden, City Lit offers thousands of short learning courses. You may choose from a one day class, 1-12 week sessions to year-long programs. And, you can fit a course into your busy life because there are daytime, evening, and weekend classes.
While living in London for 4 months, I took 12 week classes in Flamenco Dancing, Creative and Travel Writing, and French lessons. I was considered an International Student because I didn't have permanent resident status, which meant that the already reasonably priced classes had a surcharge tagged on. So, if you'll be living in London for a time, you'll certainly want to find something new to learn and make some new friends in the process!
City Lit turns 100 years old in 2019, which means they'll be celebrating all year long with activities and special events at City Lit and across the city.
To get you started thinking about what class you might like to attend, here is their education course category list.
If you're only in London for a short time, you might just want to pop in to have a look around, and check out their paper course catalog. Also, on the main floor there is a wonderful, reasonably priced cafeteria type restaurant with tables, so anyone can stop in for a quick bite.

Torre Argentina - In 1927 the Torre Argentina neighborhood was to undergo reconstruction. During the demolition, workers discovered a giant head and arms of a marble statue. Further archaeological digs unearthed a holy area with remnants of four temples. Within the protected spaces below street level, abandoned and stray cats took refuge. Today, volunteers at the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary continue to look after the health and well being of the strays. Visitors are welcome and real and distant adoptions are encouraged.
