Living on a budget in Europe means you'll likely be shopping at markets and cooking your meals at home in your own apartment. Street markets and grocery stores can be as fun, and interesting, as visiting the important landmarks and monuments in a city.
The following businesses are good to know about before you land in your city of choice.

BRUSSELS
Delhaize supermarkets strive to provide the best in fresh produce and quality prime meat prepared by well-trained butchers. Several times a day, their in-store bakeries produce fresh baked bread. Their wine department carries a large international selection of world class brands along side those that are reasonably priced. In fact, it was in this store that I began experimenting with European wines priced 3€
and under, a practice I continue today. You'll surely find one of these stores in your Brussels neighborhood.
My first flat was located on Rue Antoine Dansaert within the center circle of Brussels so I walked every where. My primary Delhaize store was on the Boulevard Anspach near the Brussels Stock Exchange.
After I moved to my second flat, I took the Metro more often and frequented several other markets too.
Carrefour Markets have nice produce, meat, and bakery departments and carry private and brand name products.
When taking the Metro, I would get off at the Rogier stop on Boulevard du Jardin Botanique and go to the Carrefour in the large City 2 Shopping Mall, which has over 150 different stores within. Once inside the mall itself, it's possible to continue on a walking path to go into the Inno Department Store.
Aldi discount grocery store was a couple blocks from my second flat on Rue Le Lorrain and because it was easier to walk to, it became my primary shop for everything. Aldi is a very successful supermarket chain owned by two German families. It has stores in many European countries as well as Australia, China, and the U.S. You may be interested to learn that Trader Joe's in the U.S. is a subsidiary of Aldi, which if you like shopping at Trader Joe's in America, then you'll also like shopping at Aldi. Aldi carries everything from fresh flowers, fresh produce, packaged goods, frozen foods, cold case cheese and deli items to personal care and household items and a nice selection of international wines and beer.
